Snow Scene

The scene is a complete imagination, trying to use some of the lessons we have gone through. In all landscapes we must persevere to obtain aerial perspective, realistic trees and shadows.

Make a rough copy of the above scene. It does not matter if you alter this scene as I have said it’s imaginary.

Here again we start with the sky. Paint the sky as we did in the previous exercise, keep the sienna much paler and into the bottom of the Ultramarine run in a mix of Payne’s Grey and Light Red. Finish off by running a patch of pure Light Red just above the hill. Remember not to paint over the tree trunks. Put in the colour of the hill in snow in the distance using Ultramarine. Leave blank spots to indicate sun light on the hill. Use the same mix for the frozen lake making the closer part of it a little darker. Add in some tree and bush forms using a pale blue green mixed from what you already have in your pallet.

We now add in the trees. First a wash of Payne’s grey with a touch of light red is put on the trunks and main branches. Run in raw umber on the shadow side only while still wet, let dry.

Mix lamp black with raw umber, with your rigger add in the small branches and twigs. With light red and a touch of raw umber lay another coat over the trunks and branches.

With lamp black and yellow, mix a dark green and paint in the Ivy over the trunks. Add more yellow to this mix and stipple in the foliage between the trees.

Mix a light green with Payne’s grey and yellow and wash in the bushes. Add in some darker greens while wet. Use the rigger again for the reeds on the right. Make upward strokes.

With opaque white, assimilate snow, on the trees, Ivy, bushes and in amongst the reeds. Add in the reeds dead flower heads using the same mix as for the twigs on the trees.

Paint in the foreground snow with a pale wash of French ultramarine, don’t cover up all the ground leave white spaces let dry. Add in a slightly darker blue to separate the lake from the foreground, put a little around the bottom of the bushes and reeds. With some greens and browns put in the leaf debris, Try and keep the track marks visible. Finally add the tree shadows using Payne’s grey with a little light red mixed with it.
