Cottage
Exercise
This
sketch is of a cottage at Swan Green in the New Forest. Copy this and we will
begin to paint.

Paint
the sky using a graduated wash of French Ultramarine. Before the wash is dry,
lift out some clouds with a little kitchen roll. Also paint the background
trees. Keep these pale green with a mix of New Gamboge and Ultramarine Marine.
Add a little more Ultramarine and drop into the pale wash at random, keep this
towards the bottom of the wash.

Paint
in the other bush’s and trees. Give the thatched roof an initial wash of Raw
Sienna. Let dry. Use the sienna to paint the tops of the chimney pots.
Over the thatch use a darker sienna mix, put a little Payne’s Grey into it. With a Rigger brush paint the small lines to assimilate the thatch.
Paint
in the foreground hedge using a wash of New Gamboge and Payne’s Grey, keep
this more to the yellow. While wet, add some Lamp Black to the wash. Remember to
try and leave parts of the fence white. Add more black to mix and add this to
the bottom of the hedge. Finish off by painting in the road with a wash of
Payne’s Grey.
